A Fortune 500 company was struggling to resolve a large billing dispute which revolved around the calculation of contract discounts negotiated several years ago. The firm believed it was overcharged but lacked the resources to confirm its suspicion. Time was of the essence since the window of opportunity was closing due to the statute of limitations.
Shaheen Solution
Shaheen implemented the following strategies: reviewed actual pricing according to contract terms; prepared an initial sample of test results which clearly indicated a systemic pattern of billing errors; isolated the problems using software and recalculated the true cost of the services over the five-year dispute period. Shaheen submitted a refund claim that the carrier promptly refused, which was a clear indication that the carrier’s strategy was to delay action until the statue of limitations expired. So, Shaheen filed a formal complaint with the State Department of Public Services requesting that the carrier justify its billing practices. For the first time, the State regulator forced the carrier to address the issue and prove its billing was correct. The carrier quickly realized its methodology was filled with mistakes. Six months later it approved our calculations and reimbursed the client $450,000, plus interest and taxes.
